Scarce Middletown Silver Plate Jewelry Casket with Cherub on Butterfly & Swallow.
According to Aestheticism, art should be produced to be beautiful, rather than to serve a moral, allegorical, or other didactic purpose, a sentiment exemplified by the slogan "art for art's sake."
This jewelry casket exemplifies these principles of the Aesthetic movement. Produced in Ct. by the Middletown Silver Co in the late 19th century. Marked Middletown Silver Co. quadruple plated, Hard White Metal and the numbers 61 and 59.
The casket measures approx 10” tall, 4”D, and 6.5” W.
The silver plate is in good condition with no areas of loss. The piece has been lightly polished to reveal the beauty of the design and could be polished by it’s new owner to an even higher degree. The interior is padded and lined with a turquoise blue silk satin.
