A Wine Thief (great for beer and cider too) is a fast and sanitary method to take a sample from a fermenting bucket or carboy. Care must be taken when working with wine after fermentation due to the risk of contamination so make sure everything is sanitized. When using the thief, a sample can be taken with minimal wine contact or agitation. Simply submerge it in the liquid, cover the top hole with your finger, lift out the sample and release the liquid into the testing container. Despite its name, the Wine Thief is ideal for any beverage including beer and cider. A glass wine thief, unlike plastic varieties, has several advantages.
