The extended rifle compartment can be rolled up and buckled in when not in use as shown in the 3rd and 5th photos. It
measures app. 26" with the compartment rolled up and buckled and measures 36" with it extended. A rifle with a 16" barrel and a short stock will fit. A rifle with an 18" barrel with a removable stock should also fit. It also has a large pouch attached by Velcro inside the rifle compartment. You can remove that , reverse it and place it over a rifle with a longer barrel and then reattach it with the Velcro pads inside the bag.
