Bought from an extensive Indianapolis Indiana Racing Collector's Estate Auction. Collector owned thousands of NASCAR, Winston Cup, Indy 500 & other racing items from the 1950's to the early 2000's. The collector appears to have been a track security employee or seasonal volunteer based on pit passes, and hundreds of personalized items, uniforms, race worn memorabilia and more he owned. He even had an Indy 500 hat signed by 7 previous winners, but it sold shortly after we listed it.
This has a Jeff Gordon autographed Baseball Cap from the very first Brickyard 400! Most of the autographed memorabilia owned by this collector, he personally had signed by the race car drivers, but this hat appears to have been a vendor sold item as the hat is unused and has authentication tag. We threw in a 1994, 1995 & 1996 pre race Pit Passes in lanyards as well & a 1995 Qualification/Practice Day Pass (unused). Kind of a neat combo for display.
Cap has Authentication Number on Gold Star Tag. This was in the days before extensive computer records were kept or grading services came into fashion. As you know or may not know, local (often Family), regional, and national vendors traveled the Winston Cup and NASCAR circuits and the drivers would sign hats & other items for them under a pay per item contract.
There were also promotional pre race events & vendor tents during qualifying, pre & post race events, etc. In other words, it was a marketing mecca, but before the high tech age. That said, the driver's Rep's, event sponsor's, track officials, etc, were very serious even at that time about only allowing authentic items at such events. If you went to these events you are probably aware of the efforts made at the time.
This may have been a pre race item or a post, as this was only Jeff's 2nd Winston Cup Win. His items would have mostly been sought by local shoppers as Jeff was from Pittsboro, Indiana, just 30 miles away. While most race fans in Indiana knew who he was at the time, not many others did. This race helped launch Jeff Gordon into legendary status. Jeff was only a second year driver at the time.
You are buying this gem, exactly as we did, in the same Ziplock bag. We only removed it for photo's. The collector apparently paid 0 at the time he bought it in 1994, as it still had a tag with it. That seemed high for 1994, but the race was in Indy. (We misplaced the price tag, as we just discovered when moving item).
There is almost no way to try & match this item on eBay, or other outside sites or private auctions. Private NASCAR Collectors will obviously not let them go & dealers may want 0 or more, especially now that Jeff retired. There has only been one sell on eBay (a blue & white cap) with authentication and it sold in 2016 for 5.
On the Gold Star Stamp, you can see where the original owner (or his Grandson perhaps) marked 1994 in a pen, as the stamp was very light. I tried to read the Gold Stamp with Hologram, but could not make it out for certain. It looks like it says Hair Hasters (or Masters) International Inc., but the letters have lost boldness over time. It is numbered #135256 as shown. There were a large number of other authenticated items at the sale where this was obtained that were more modern & some seriously rare items like race worn suits, car accessories (left after wrecks), original race pics from the 1950's and on, & a myriad of die casts, cards & more common but highly collectible items. This collector was obsessive & serious about his items.
We will be listing more items as time allows and many others have already sold.
Please look over multiple pictures taken & do your own research. It was sold to us as authentic at the estate auction and that is the best assessment we can make. Let me know if you have any questions.
We ship with extreme care! Of course there is free local pick up and we can meet to assist if you are near Indianapolis or driving through. We do this often. We do not require signature confirmation unless you request it, but there is no extra charge for it. Also, we have discounts with FedEx & eBay on shipping which do not always show up in eBay estimates on shipping. We try to refund what we can when there is a notable difference, but we do not know until we actually process the shipping order.
