Antique Vintage Equestrian Horse Riding Polo Helmet Molded Fabric

I am really not sure what this hat was used for although it definitely resembles a hat worn during equestrian activities.  It is made of molded heavy fabric of some sort with a coating that makes it rock hard.  It has 4 little knobs on the top . It is in very good condition as is the leather band and heavy fabric straps.  The inside leather band is separated under the brim . There is a string that surrounds the outside that is broken in one place.  I do not know the size but the inside diameters are 7.25" x 6.25".  The brim looks a little longer in the first photo than it actually is.
