    Description

    Antique, Hand-Carved, Doll Bed,
    Original Alligatored Finish
For your consideration is this rare, handmade/hand-carved doll bed. There are 10 decorative carved elements - which could be an indication of Pennsylvania Dutch decorations. Three are on each headboard post and the other four are on the back bottom of the legs (see close-up of the leg and headboard). The finish (paint?) is alligatored (see picture). Great Grandpa made this and wanted it to be sturdy - so he constructed this with nails (it does not fold up). I am estimating this to be circa 1920. The cross bars that hold the mattress and pillow do not have any finish on them - they are raw. The side rails are mortised into the headboard and footboard. The headboard is made up of four wooden pieces and the top is a carved half-moon shape. There is a small area on the headboard that is a bit lighter (see pictures) - it's about the size of a quarter. The mattress and pillow come with the bed - the material on them is an early, blue, checked cotton. When I first saw this it reminded me of a piece of art - it really has a 'sense of presence'. It measures 15 inches in length, 16.5 inches in height at the headboard and 10 inches in height at the footboard. The width measures 9.5 inches. It's a wonderful piece of folk art.

AAFA means Antique Americana Folk Art and is used as a short cut to finding items that are true antiques, not reproductions, and are American. I will only use the AAFA designation for items which fit the criteria.
